North West SfEP group

In the beginning

Our group was started in May 2009 by Ann Ridgway (read Ann's account of how this came about in the Sep/Oct 2010 issue of Editing Matters). From humble beginnings (with only three of us attending the first meeting), the group has developed by leaps and bounds. Each of our meetings now usually attracts 15 or so members: a mixture of associates and ordinary and advanced members, covering a wide range of disciplines and skills. See our directory for more details.

We have no official boundaries – as long as you belong to the SfEP and are in or near the North West, you can join our group!

Our approach

We aim to be friendly and helpful, assisting each other however we can – for example, by swapping tips, giving moral support and reassurance, passing on potential work leads and offering opportunities to network and socialise with other members.

We've organised an informal course on macros, and have also arranged for the SfEP one-day course 'Getting work with non-publishers' to be run locally. We're hoping to arrange more local training that attracts SfEP training points (so participants can work towards upgrading their membership).

Our meetings

We meet three times a year at the Windmill pub, Knutsford. This venue has been chosen for its central and convenient location for those travelling from many directions. Lifts are available from various areas and local stations.

Our meetings – which include a pub meal – are usually held on the first Tuesday in February, June and October at 7.30pm. They are informal – we use an agenda to keep us on track, but it's in no way cast in stone. We're always delighted to welcome new members, and non-members can attend up to three meetings, to see if the SfEP will suit them.

Our directory

If you're looking for someone to carry out editorial work on a freelance basis, check out our directory, where you'll find more than a dozen members (advanced and ordinary) and associates with a wide range of expertise.
