Members and associates of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders provide editorial services to publishers and a wide range of companies, government agencies and other bodies. Many of us are also copywriters, indexers, project managers, translators and/or typesetters.

Joyce Burgess
Ordinary member, based in Didsbury, Manchester.Joyce specialises in business, complementary medicine and psychology, and has experience of editing and proofreading academic papers, company literature and training materials.
Sarah Carr
Advanced member, based in Cheshire.Sarah offers plain-English services: writing, rewriting, summarising, editing, proofreading, document kitemarking and readability testing. She has degrees in language and business, is an associate of the Plain Language Commission, and has written Tackling NHS Jargon: Getting the message across (Radcliffe Medical Press, 2002). Caroline Dandy
Associate, based in Chester.Caroline has over 15 years' experience as an editor and proofreader, working in-house at HarperCollins and Consumers' Association in London and latterly as a freelance for corporate clients. Nicholas Green
Associate, based in Mid Wales.Nicholas has a BA Hons degree in law and French. He attained a merit pass in the PTC course Basic Proofreading by Distance Learning in January 2011. He has attended two SfEP courses and recently completed its mentoring scheme. Using both online and hard copy methodology, he has proofread: three issues of the literary publication Journal of The Kilvert Society; a crime thriller novel; and a policy document for the British Red Cross. Deborah Hey
Advanced member, based near Bolton.Deborah has been a freelance copy editor and proofreader since 1996. She works mainly on-screen, and specialises in the fields of law, tax, finance, and education. She's used to liaising with commissioning editors, authors and typesetters, coordinating a number of projects from different clients, and working flexibly, to tight deadlines and within limited budgets. Penny Howes
Advanced member, based in Cheshire.I have a BSc and PhD in physiology and pharmacology and a City & Guilds licentiateship in editorial skills. I offer clients a firm foundation of editorial skills and experience, coupled with in-depth knowledge of medical specialisms, research and the publication process.

Tamara (Tammi) Merrell
Associate, based in Stockport.I have a BA Hons degree in business studies and over 11 years' experience working in the financial sector. I passed the PTC Basic Proofreading course with merit in October 2010. I specialise in business and history; however, I would be interested in undertaking proofreading work across a wide range of subjects. I have an entry in the SfEP Associates Available.
Fay Perry
Associate, based in Lancashire.I'm just embarking on a career in freelance proofreading. I've completed a number of SfEP training courses, and I'm currently undertaking the Publishing Training Centre (PTC) distance learning course in proofreading.
Aside from my background in IT, I have a degree in sociology and politics and some training in psychology, all of which are subjects I would be happy to work with. However, I'm willing to take on most areas. Work I have done so far for friends includes poetry and a translated coffee table book on the lives of Italian artists.
Irene Pizzie
Associate, based in Stoke on Trent.I'm a freelance copy-editor, writer and proofreader, working mainly on scientific textbooks and articles. I have a BSc in physics, and my main areas of expertise include physics, mathematics, engineering and astronomy.
I've been providing editorial services since 1984. Current and previous clients include Cambridge University Press, Hobsons Press, CRAC, Elsevier, Institution of Electrical Engineers and many independent authors of fiction and non-fiction books and courses, web copy and e-books.
Kate Redmond
Associate, based in Cheadle, Manchester.I'm a biology graduate and began my career working as an in-house editor for one of the UK's best-selling educational publishers. I've been freelance for the past five years and work regularly for a number of different publishers, including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Hodder and Pearson. I do copy editing (mainly on-screen), proofreading and project management. I specialise in science and education but will consider most subjects. More about Kate.
Ann Ridgway
Ordinary member, based in south Cheshire, near Nantwich.Ann specialises in proofreading accounting, finance, human resources, economics and law for leading publishers, but also has considerable experience in answer-checking of online and printed answers for accounting books. Pamela Skipwith
Advanced member, based in Shropshire. ,I've been proofreading and copy-editing books since 1991. My work has covered company literature, journals, online e-learning material, websites and full calendar grids (with moon phases and international holidays). I proofread and copy edit both hard copy and on-screen, liaising as appropriate with authors (and multi-authors) and commissioning editors.
My main subjects are: the voluntary sector, consumer credit and other legal publications, humanities, social sciences and Christian publications; technical online manuals; and healthcare websites. More about Pamela.
Alison Smith
Ordinary member, based in Manchester.After a career as a psychology lecturer, I'm now working as a freelance copy editor and proofreader and also undertake some freelance work in the field of education. I've mainly worked in the area of non-fiction, but am interested in taking on work from a variety of sources. I have an entry in the SfEP Associates Available.
Martin Thacker
Advanced member, based in Lymm, Cheshire.Martin specialises in English literature, music, education, theology, and transport history, but is happy to consider most other subjects. He also designs and typesets small to medium-length projects, such as journals for societies. More about Martin.
Alison Walters
Ordinary member, based in Leigh, Lancashire.I have been proofreading for ten years, undertaking several SfEP courses and four conferences and currently working through the PTC copy-editing course. Most of my clients are PR, training, design and marketing companies and range from small businesses to larger companies. I have a base of more than 10 regular clients and work on reports, press releases, newsletters, brochures, Report and Accounts and marketing collateral, among other things.
