SfEP AGM and 21st annual conference
Succeeding through innovation

University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
Sat–Mon 4–6 September 2010

As we approach the end of this century's first decade, Glasgow is a fitting venue for a conference that aims to inspire innovative thinking that can take your career forward.

We hope you'll join us at the University of Strathclyde in 2010 for a productive and enjoyable two-and-a-half days packed with mind-stretching learning and valuable networking. You'll also have a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones – in a city that has it all.

Whitcombe lecture

This will be delivered by Trevor Dolby, head of the Random House imprint Preface Publishing, which he has set up with commercial fiction legend Rosie de Courcy.

With a career spanning over 25 years, Trevor published some of the bestselling books of the period, working with both small and large companies. In 2003, he was winner of both the Editor and the Imprint of the Year awards at the British Book Awards. Expert in the relationship between publishing, television and film, he is a regular panellist, speaker and columnist on all things books.

Seminars

These will cover topics as diverse as: the typesetter–copy-editor interface (David MacDonald, director, Prepress Projects); exploiting social internet platforms for professional networking (Louise Bolotin, SfEP advanced member); and ethics and plagiarism in publishing (Elizabeth Wager, Sideview, an authority on written communication and academic publications).

Workshops

In York in 2009, most of the new workshops received highly positive feedback. So this year we're repeating several of them so that both returning delegates and new ones can have a chance of attending them. Workshop topics will include:

*Laptops optional **Laptops mandatory

'Something for everyone'

These highly successful sessions, introduced at York, will include topics such as: editing/proofreading dissertations and theses; issues regarding subcontracting; on-the-ground networking; and guidance on upgrading your membership. There will also be a panel session on good practice, including in-house delegates who commission freelance work.

Pre-conference networking event: Highlights of Glasgow

Saturday 4 September 2010, start 1.30pm (duration approximately 2 hours)

Join us for a walk led by members of the SfEP Glasgow group to see some of the city's highlights and network with other delegates.

Glasgow has a rich history, reflected in its fascinating architecture and open spaces. You will visit Glasgow Green, the People's Palace, the Merchant City, St Mungo's Cathedral and the Necropolis. The pace of the walk will be adapted to suit the participants – however, Glasgow is built on a hill, so there will be ups and downs! Lunch will be available for a small charge if required.
