SfEP AGM and 23rd annual conference
The many faces of editing
Vanbrugh College, University of York
Sat–Mon 8–10 September 2012
Programme highlights
There will be the usual diverse, enlightening and entertaining programme of lectures, seminars and workshops at this year's conference. You can see the detailed programme now – here are the highlights:
Whitcombe Lecture
This year's Whitcombe lecturer will be Jessica Kingsley, now something of a legend in the publishing world. At the beginning of 1987, with an overdraft of just £5,000, she started Jessica Kingsley Publishers on her kitchen table. It's now recognised as the leading publisher on autism and Asperger syndrome.
Jessica has been chair of the Independent Publishers Guild, served on the British Council Publishers Advisory Council and was for many years a council member of the Publishers Association. Most recently she was chair of the Society of Bookmen, and she now serves on the advisory committees of the publishing MA courses at the London College of Communication and City University.
After-banquet speaker
Our after-dinner speaker will be Professor Deborah Cameron, a linguist who currently works as professor of language and communication in the English faculty of Oxford University. Her books include Verbal Hygiene, The Myth of Mars and Venus: Do men and women really speak different languages? and The Teacher's Guide to Grammar. She is an occasional broadcaster on topics relating to language, and once tried her hand at linguistic stand-up comedy.
