The SfEP offers its associates and members – from beginners to the most experienced – a variety of benefits, from help with finding work to discounts on books.

Help getting work

Regular networking opportunities

  • AGM and annual two-day conference, which includes a varied programme of workshops and lectures.
  • Access to email discussion groups and an announcement list
    • SfEPLine for online discussion and advice
    • SfEPAnnounce for announcements and job offers
    • special interest groups – e.g. medical, legal.
  • Membership of local groups.

Training

  • Comprehensive programme of affordable courses – from beginner level to specialist – run by the SfEP at locations around the UK.
  • Mentoring schemes in proofreading and copy-editing.
  • Training vouchers for new associates to defray the cost of one SfEP course in each of their first two years in the Society, courtesy of the Dorothy Mitchell Smith Memorial Fund.

Increasing professionalism

  • Opportunity to progress from being an associate to having ordinary membership. Among other things, ordinary members are entitled to take an entry in the annual SfEP Directory, and they can progress to advanced membership.
  • Access to the SfEP's professional qualifications Accreditation and Registration.
  • Email address – in the form: name@sfep.net – for advanced members.
  • Use of special SfEP logos for advanced members and for registered and accredited proofreaders and copy-editors.

Benefits of becoming a corporate associate

The SfEP works to improve communication between editors and proofreaders and their clients. It welcomes as corporate associates all publishing houses and other businesses and organizations that use the services of editors and proofreaders.

Corporate associates:

  • automatically receive up to 10 copies of each issue of the SfEP's newsletter Editing Matters
  • pay reduced fees for SfEP training
  • can have inserts in SfEP mailings (subject to a charge to cover costs incurred)
  • have access to the annual conference
  • have access to email discussion groups, an announcement list and local groups
  • can advertise for freelances or in-house staff on SfEPAnnounce free of charge and without limit.
