Society for Editors and Proofreaders Conference
12–14 September 2004
Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham, Surrey

A Meeting of Minds

If you haven't been to an SfEP conference before – and even if you have – you're in for a treat this year!

The focus of this year’s conference is the impact of new technology on the publishing industry and how this is affecting the jobs we do. Learn about the challenges our profession is facing, and be inspired.

Workshop topics include:

  • starting out – approaching potential clients
  • negotiating skills
  • working for a client
  • computer housekeeping
  • stress management
  • on-screen editing.

This year's Whitcombe Lecture will be given by John Stephens, dean of the School of Printing and Publishing, London College of Communication – someone who is well placed to know about technological change in our industry. John Whitley, chief executive of the Publishing Training Centre, will give a keynote speech on Tuesday morning about the future for people in the publishing industry and how, through training, we can ensure our skills stay in tune with the industry.

Throughout the two days, there will be other short talks, discussion forums and a panel discussion, not to mention numerous opportunities for networking and the conference dinner on Monday evening.

The conference will start socially after the SfEP AGM on Sunday 12 September, giving conference delegates an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones while admiring the splendid architecture of Egham's gloriously Gothic Victorian landmark, the Royal Holloway, University of London. If you have the time and inclination to explore, then the Savill Garden, Virginia Water and historic Windsor are all nearby.

The SfEP's slogan is 'upholding editorial excellence' and the conference is one way in which the society helps its members and anyone who aspires to excellence in the written word to achieve that aim. The conference is open to individual members and associates and corporate associates of the Society; delegates from other interested organizations are also welcome.

Details of the fees for attending the conference are on the booking form, which can be downloaded from this site. There are discounts available for individual members and associates who book early or who are attending the conference for the first time.

For further information about the conference and the full programme, please contact Jane Ward (tel: 0131 337 4380, email: ) or go to the annual conference page on the SfEP website.
