Accessible and efficient – the new SfEP website

The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) has relaunched its website, following a major redesign – by WestWindMoves of Liverpool – and the introduction of new information architecture to make it more accessible. All the content has been re-edited to make it appropriate for an online environment. The new site (http://www.sfep.org.uk) is easy to use and contains a vast amount of information – everything you need to know about the SfEP and what it does is available in just a few clicks of a mouse.

The website is the SfEP's main means of promoting itself to the outside world and one of its two ways of communicating with its members (the other being the SfEP magazine, Editing Matters). In 2004, it was felt that the original website, launched in the mid-1990s, needed a fresh look, clear navigation and more user-oriented facilities to take the SfEP into its next phase of development.

'You should now be able to find everything you need, quickly and efficiently,' says Nancy Duin, the SfEP's Internet Director. 'In addition, a lot of content that was previously buried – details of our qualifications, interesting reports from our conferences – can be easily accessed. We also aim to ensure that the site is constantly changing and growing, giving our members added value.'

A major feature of the website is the online (searchable) version of the SfEP Directory, which provides contact information for over 500 SfEP members plus brief details of the skills, subjects and services they offer. It gives publishers and others seeking editorial help access to a large number of professional editors, proofreaders and project managers and enables them to pinpoint quickly and easily those with the skills required.

About the SfEP:

The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) is a non-profit-distributing organization (formally, a company limited by guarantee) with the twin aims of promoting high editorial standards and achieving recognition of the professional status of its members. We have around 1300 members and associates (mostly in the UK), providing a wide range of editorial services to the publishing industry and beyond. More than 40 publishing companies are corporate associates of the SfEP.
