Accreditation in proofreading

This is awarded by the SfEP to members or associates who have successfully completed a rigorous proofreading test set by the Society's Accreditation and Registration Board.

The test comprises:

  • part(s) of a set of page proofs to be proofread against copy
  • some pages of proofs to be read 'blind' (without copy)
  • a set of short questions on proofreading.

The test covers:

  • correct use of BSI marks for proof correction in the correct colours
  • correction of textual errors and inconsistencies
  • correction of typographical errors (e.g. wrong fonts and incorrect make-up)
  • checking correct treatment of illustrations and tables.

For more information, see Accreditation in proofreading: Prospectus and Accreditation in proofreading: Guidance for candidates.

Applications must be made on the application form for Accreditation in proofreading (included in the prospectus) and must be accompanied by the specified fee. A test will be sent to you on an agreed date, to be completed at home and returned within 15 days.
