- how to use a PC or Mac, mouse and pull-down menus with confidence
- how to create folders and manage files
- the concept of styling
- the concept of document templates
- how to use Find & Replace
- how to format characters to be bold, italic, subscript, superscript, small caps, etc.

You must have all the skills above, otherwise you should acquire them before the course or enrol on On-screen editing 1.
Strongly recommended skill
You should understand the basic concept of how characters are represented by ASCII codes.
Recommended skills (Microsoft Word)
You understand:
- adding and attaching templates
- creating and applying styles
- recording and using macros
- using features such as:
- show/hide
- shortcut keys
- the Help too
- borders
- inserting en rules and en spaces.
Remember that, although the OSE courses are based on Microsoft Word on an IBM-compatible PC, the principles are, in general, portable to other word processors (e.g. WordPerfect) and operating systems (e.g. Macintosh). However, because OSE 2 follows on from OSE 1, familiarity with Word is recommended (but not essential) in order to get the most out of the day. This familiarity can be gained on a PC or a Macintosh.
