One of the major aims of the SfEP is to help editorial freelances and in-house staff to improve and develop their skills. SfEP courses cater for the whole range of experience, from beginners to established editors who need to update and extend their existing skills. See reasons for training to get more of an idea of why training is so important in the fields of proofreading and editing.
Attending training courses and taking part in mentoring can count towards Professional and Advanced Professional Member status (see structure). New Entry-Level Members and Intermediate Members are entitled to a training voucher worth £20 from the Dorothy Mitchell Smith Memorial Fund to help defray the costs of one SfEP course.
The Society also runs a mentoring scheme for those who have already completed some training in proofreading and/or copy-editing.
