I specialise in proofreading and copy-editing of non-fiction material, and I have the most experience working on biological and medical texts (from undergraduate-level textbooks to online commentaries by leading scientists from around the world). I also have expertise in working with authors for whom English is not a native language, and in anglicising, Americanising, and amending text to match a given style, as appropriate.
I have both in-house and freelance publishing experience, I am comprehensively trained, and I pride myself in the flexibility, diligence, tact, and support that I am able to offer my clients.
I am a native English speaker and British citizen, residing in a quiet village in north-east Bulgaria.
When I am not proofreading or copy-editing, I spend my time working on my smallholding, assisting with renovation and construction work, learning Bulgarian, and indulging in a wide variety of fibre and thread crafts.

Joanna proof-read a thirty-page response to a consultation on controversial changes in health services in our remote part of Cumbria in the English Lake District. The work was carried out for West Cumbrians’ Voice for Healthcare, a campaign group consisting mainly of retired medical professionals with expertise in specific areas of healthcare. Other members have expertise in medical statistics, the local voluntary sector and in stakeholder relations. The main audiences for the response were consultation analysts and NHS managers, but we also wanted it to be accessible to the non-medical reader. The proof-reading difficulty was that each section of the response was written by an expert in that area and we needed to apply a consistency of style and content. I wrote part of the document and edited the rest, but became concerned that errors had crept in and that the consistency was not as good as it could be. There were many last minute changes and additions and a tight deadline to meet. I felt I needed a professional outside eye to help.
Joanna carried out the proof-reading for us and did an excellent job. She was extremely thorough, not only in the basic proof-reading of the content, but in suggesting changes for clarity and consistency. She checked all the references, for instance pointing out where a referenced document had been replaced by another. I would certainly recommend her to anyone who needs someone to carry out a highly professional proof-reading project.
