Membership structure

Page owner: Membership director

Anyone can join the SfEP as an Entry-Level Member. If you have the right qualifications and experience, you can apply to enter at a higher level – as an Intermediate, Professional or Advanced Professional Member. Once you have gained qualifications and experience, you can upgrade to those levels.

Please note: If you apply to join as an Intermediate, Professional or Advanced Professional Member, you will hold that grade provisionally until your application has been assessed. This leaflet explains how provisional membership works. You must submit the evidence to support your application within one month of joining. If no upgrade form has been received within that time, we will enrol you as an Entry-Level Member; but of course you can upgrade at any time.

If you don't have a standard proofreading/copy-editing background or training, you may believe that you would not be eligible to become a member or upgrade to Professional Membership. However, it is quite common for those editing, proofreading and performing other editorial tasks to gain their skills in many different ways and to work for a wide range of clients. The SfEP recognises this in assessing applications. If you have any doubts as to your eligibility for one of the higher grades of membership, please contact the professional development director to discuss them.

Retiring members

Someone who has been a Professional or Advanced Professional Member, has deliberately scaled down their professional proofreading and copy-editing activity and no longer wishes to use SfEP resources to gain work or take SfEP courses may become a Retired Member at the annual renewal (1 March each year).
