Your experience: what we need to know

In-house (employed)

We need to know what sort of work you carried out and how much of it. Please tell us:

  • The name of the company
    If it is not a well-known company, it would be helpful if you could supply more information, such as the type of publication it produces and where the office is located.
  • How long you worked there
  • Whether you worked full time
    If it was part-time work, how many hours a week?
  • What sort of work you did
    Was it all proofreading and/or copy-editing or did you do other things, such as project management, picture research or applying for permissions?
  • Roughly how much of your working time (as a percentage or fraction) was spent on proofreading and/or copy-editing

If you have significant in-house experience over a number of years, you may only need to provide references and pass the basic editorial test to upgrade your membership (a pass in the editorial test will confirm that you have been trained well by your employer). As a guide, significant experience is around 2-5 years of employment for PM grade.

Freelance (self-employed)
