About the   local group

The   local group covers the Three Rivers region and meets informally once every two or three months, usually midweek, for lunch in a pub near Newcastle or Durham. Our meetings are a mix of discussions about matters of professional interest plus networking to swap ideas, problems, solutions and contacts – plus inevitably stories of misplaced apostrophes and the like. Members have a wide range of specialist skills and technical competence, so there's usually much to learn from one another.

Over the last couple of years we have added occasional trips to places of interest (such as the Lit & Phil library in Newcastle) and have also had presentations with a chance for questions and answers. We have had a visit from a local published author, and also a round table discussion with the local Society of Indexers group. We have also started to have meetings dedicated to one topic, including a recent stimulating discussion about editing theses and dissertations. In addition, we have an annual Christmas social lunch.

Upcoming events include a one-day workshop about using macros in Word and a meeting with a local publisher, scheduled for early 2016. There are usually one or two members who attend the annual SfEP conference, so it's interesting to hear their reports back, and nice to see a friendly face when you're there.

New members have commented that the group is very friendly and relaxed, and that talking to other members can be very helpful. It is a sociable environment but also a genuine learning opportunity, so do come along! To find out more or to join the group, contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
