About the local group
So, what goes on at this local group?
We chat. We eat and drink. We advise and ask for advice. We support each other. We celebrate success. We share best practice – and frustrations. We discuss opportunities.
But if you’re really keen to know what goes on at our group, then come along to the next get-together.
We’re a friendly, very welcoming bunch and our meetings are informal: they’re socials with work chat thrown in for good measure. Most of all, we enjoy the opportunity to spend an evening with our local colleagues discussing the type of work we have on and the intricacies of being proofreaders and copy-editors.
When new people come along to find out more about proofreading, to get first-hand views on the training available or to ask about how to find work, we focus our attention on providing as much guidance and advice as we can ... and hope we see them next time.
First impressions ... and five years on
As I write this, it’s coming up to five years since I gathered my first impressions of my first South Warwickshire/Coventry local group meeting. I write ‘meeting’, but really it was a social gathering in a cosy pub with friendly and interesting people. Everyone chatted (mostly about editing and proofreading!) until the food arrived and our focus temporarily switched to eating before the animated and involved discussion quickly picked up again.
Five years on (I now co-run the group with Bev Sykes) and, thankfully, not much has changed. Some new faces, some departed faces (new county, new country!) and a new pub, just down the road.
We’re still a happy mix of experienced editors and those just starting out, and the chat is still free-flowing, leading towards helping and supporting those around the table. There’s no set agenda.
That’s what Bev and I particularly love about the group: people can come along with a problem to discuss, a solution to give – or both. Five years ago, I was completing my proofreading training alongside a part-time job. Now, I’m running a busy proofreading and copywriting business. I think my decision to be brave and go along to the local group with an open mind and a few questions was just what I needed ...Jenny Gibson, South Warwickshire/Coventry local group co-coordinator – 23 October 2018
