About the SfEP
The Society for Editors and Proofreaders has three main aims:
Formed in November 1988, the SfEP now has about 1,400 members and associates (mostly in the UK) providing editorial services to publishers and a wide range of companies, government agencies and other bodies.
The Society provides training and professional qualifications, and publishes the online Directory of Editorial Services provided by its members. The membership communicates with each other via a number of popular email discussion lists, and the Society publishes the bi-monthly magazine Editing Matters. The members-only SfEPWiki is a growing repository of the Society's collective wisdom and experience.
Key dates in SfEP history
The Society for Editors and Proofreaders celebrated its 21st birthday on 26 November 2009. Here we take a look at the important events in our history.
Council and executive secretary
The SfEP is managed by a council of 11 directors who hold their posts for up to two years. The SfEP's Lillian Avon (covering for Justina Amenu while she is on maternity leave) liaises with the council, handles all queries relating to PR, in-house training and membership benefits and acts as the Society's company secretary.
An analysis of all tasks performed by the council and executive secretary has been carried out.
The council has developed a Strategy 2009–2011.
In 2009/10, council meetings will be held on:
Minutes of council meetings are available in the Members' area and on request; such requests should be sent to the SfEP's company secretary. NB: Minutes are confidential and should be discussed only with SfEP directors.
Important documents
The operation of the SfEP is governed by two important documents:
In addition, to further its aims, the SfEP has developed an extensive Code of Practice.
Public relations
The SfEP's executive secretary Lillian Avon is the first point of contact for public relations for the Society. Journalists and editors seeking comment on any matter relating to the SfEP or to editorial issues in general should or telephone 020 8785 5616.

Corporate associates may also advertise for both freelances and in-house staff free of charge, with no limit on the number of advertisements. These advertisements should be emailed to the , who will forward them to the list.
SfEP ordinary and advanced members may advertise free of charge for freelances only.
