Code of Practice

Ensuring editorial excellence

All members of the SfEP sign up to this code, which sets out best practice for everyone in editorial work, freelance or in-house – editors, proofreaders and project managers – and their clients or employers.

Continuing Professional Development

Editorial professionals never stop learning, but there are lots of ways to keep up to date, fill gaps in your knowledge or extend your skill set.


A contract can be as simple as an exchange of emails. If you need something more than that, use the SfEP model contracts (individual or limited company) and terms & conditions.

Dignity Policy

Participating with dignity in all SfEP events and activities

All members are expected to adhere to this policy, which demonstrates the SfEP’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) by setting out our requirements of members, staff and other participants in SfEP events and activities, both in person and online.

Editorial syllabus

Clients and the public depend on SfEP members for good editing and proofreading. The syllabus lists what competent editorial professionals need to know or be aware of.

Membership levels

Professional and Advanced Professional members have shown proof of editorial training, extensive experience and satisfied clients who know good editing when they see it.


This is a gap that the SfEP intends to fill. We list previous qualifications that were discontinued.

The basic editorial test was launched in 2014 as an option for members who need to prove basic competence at Professional level. Tests are based on the SfEP editorial syllabus.
